From stunning views of lakes and mountains to peaceful woodland paths, there’s a trail for everyone. Let’s dive into some of the best hiking trails in this amazing area!
Mount Major, Alton
Mount Major is a must-visit for hikers of all skill levels. The Mt. Major trail is marked in blue and is approximately 1.5 miles to the summit. Although it is a little more difficult than the 1.6 mile Boulder Loop trail (marked in orange), it is still a moderately easy hike. Once at the summit, take in the breathtaking views of Lake Winnipesaukee. The summit is the perfect spot for a picnic, so pack a lunch and enjoy the scenery!
Lockes Hill, Gilford
Lockes Hill is a family-friendly trail located in Gilford, right down the road from Mount Major. This 1.8-mile loop is relatively easy and features beautiful views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding mountains. Along the way, you’ll find informational signs about the area’s natural history, making it both fun and educational. My kids used to love stopping at the chairs made of rock to sit and enjoy the view.
Belknap Mountain, Gilford
For those seeking a bit more of a challenge than Lockes Hill, Belknap Mountain offers a rewarding hike. The trail is about 4.7 mile loop and takes you to the top of the highest peak in the Belknap Range. The fire tower at the summit provides panoramic views of the Lakes Region and beyond.
Meredith Community Forest, Meredith
If you aren’t looking for mountain hiking, but still want to see a small waterfall, wetlands and an active beaver pond, this may be the place for you. These trails are great for all levels of hikers. They offer peaceful walks through woodlands and are the perfect spot to enjoy nature and perhaps catch sight of some local wildlife
