How long is apple picking season?

Weather has a huge impact on any crop and apple season is no different.  Extensive rain can shorten the season dramatically.  Typically, we can start picking around mid-August through October or early November, with September being the best month to find them at their peak.

Where to go to pick your own apples

Stone Mountain Farm

Stone Mountain Farm on 106 in Belmont is where I currently go to get my apples.  You can pick your own, or you can pull up by the farm stand and fill your bag from there.  Prices for apples are based on the size of the bag, not the weight, so you are encouraged to fill your bags well.  The farm stand is open daily, but the pick your own apples and the Donut Truck are only open on weekends.  Don’t let that discourage you from grabbing cider and donuts during the week, however, because they are available at the farm stand at that time. Click here to see the variety of apples you can pick and their hours of operation.

Smith Orchard

Smith Orchard in Belmont is where I used to take my kids apple picking.  After pick your own blueberry season, you can either pick your own and pay by the pound or buy a prepackaged bag.  Tractor rides are a family favorite and don’t forget your donuts and cider!

Surowiec Farm

Surowiec Farm in Sanbornton should be ready for apple picking early September.  While you’re there, be sure to head to the greenhouse displays and the many varieties of squash!  Of course, they have their apple cider and donuts available, as well.  Click here for their hours of operation and contact information.

Meadow Ledge Farm

Meadow Ledge Farm in Loudon does more than just apples.  Visit them for mums, cheeses, honeys, veggies and more.  If you make it there on the weekend, you can enjoy the fresh cider, homemade pies and other baked goods, and don’t forget the apple cider donuts!  Click here for hours of operation and more details.

Hackleboro Orchard

Hackleboro Orchard in Canterbury is ready for you to grab a bag and start picking after pick your own blueberry season ends.  Kids can enjoy the bouncy house or a hay ride and there may even be some live music.  Don’t leave without grabbing the fresh cider and donuts!  To see more details about what they have available and get their hours of operation, click here.

How to pick the best apples

When picking your own apples, look for apples that are firm and have a bright color. Gently twist the apple off the branch instead of pulling it. This helps keep the tree healthy. Make sure to wear comfy shoes and clothes because you’ll be walking around the orchard and, if you’re not sure which types of apples you like, ask the staff about which types have a sweet or tart flavor. Don’t forget to have fun and enjoy the fresh air!
